One of these companies, AdGuard, revealed to Wired that since October 9, over 11,000 people have uninstalled its Chrome extension each day. This number compares to 6,000 daily uninstallations before YouTube enacted the adjustment.

According to Andrey Meshkov, the company’s Chief Technical Officer, AdGuard had 52,000 users remove the program on just October 18. Notably, there has been a rise in the number of installations of AdGuard’s commercial version, which is not impacted by YouTube’s crackdown.

Another firm that blocks advertisements, Ghostery, said that its user base did not change significantly throughout October. They saw three to five times the normal daily volume of installations and uninstallations. Surprisingly, more than ninety percent of users who were surveyed and asked why they had uninstalled the application indicated that it was because the tool no longer worked with YouTube.

Because YouTube’s changes appear to have the most significant impact on Chrome users on desktop computers, some people have looked into using alternate browsers as a workaround. According to information provided by Ghostery to Wired, the number of installs of the Microsoft Edge browser witnessed a thirty percent spike during October in comparison to September.

End of an Era?
